Mission/History

Our Mission

The Mission of Sarah’s House is to be a community resource and safely bring victims of domestic violence and homelessness towards self-sufficiency.

Our History

Sarah’s House began in 2001 with a simple act of compassion. When a woman and her adult child with disabilities arrived at the founders’ church with nowhere to go, the two founders felt compelled to respond. Determined that no one in their community would face crisis alone, they began raising funds to place families in hotels and to provide food, rent, and utility assistance.

As the need grew, Sarah’s House expanded its services to include a food pantry and homeless prevention assistance, ensuring individuals and families had access to the essentials that help keep them safe, stable, and supported.

In 2005, the organization opened its first emergency shelter on Wichita Street in Pasadena, Texas. The 16-bed facility became a haven for individuals experiencing homelessness and crisis, providing safety, meals, supportive services, and access to basic necessities.

In 2015, Sarah’s House relocated to its current 50,000-square-foot facility on Perla Road. Although the space was initially leased, it provided room for growth and an opportunity to expand services. In 2019, Sarah’s House purchased the entire building, securing a permanent home and marking a major milestone in the organization’s development.

In 2020, an internal assessment revealed that approximately 85 percent of those served were survivors of domestic violence. This insight shifted the organization’s mission and priorities, leading to expanded services designed specifically for survivors. In 2021, the emergency shelter grew to 25 beds and began offering comprehensive domestic violence services.

The organization continued to expand in 2023 with the launch of the Non-Residential Services Program. This program provides outreach, counseling, food pantry access, and support to survivors who do not require immediate shelter but still need safety and resources.

In October 2025, Sarah’s House increased our shelter capacity to 30 and launched our first housing assistance program. This program equips individuals and families with housing support, and case management needed to move from crisis to long-term stability.

From its beginnings as a grassroots effort to its growth into a comprehensive, multi-service organization, Sarah’s House remains committed to restoring safety, stability, and hope. Every step of our journey reflects our dedication to walking alongside individuals and families facing domestic violence and homelessness, offering support, restoring dignity, and opening the door to a New Beginning.
